CryptoTower Racing Team’s Yifei Ye lowered the pace to record his fifth Euroformula pole from six attempts in the second qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring.
Due to a early morning start, the session was clouded by mist at the beginning and this meant air temperatures were cooler. That soon dispersed, but not after Ye’s team-mate Rui Andrade spun on cold tyres.
When the track warmed up it was Motopark’s Manuel Maldonado who had the hottest pace, going fastest until Ye found a rhythm and put in some quick laps.
The session was then red flagged when Van Amersfoort Racing’s Alexandre Bardinon spun into the gravel, and the track warmed even more in the break.
Ye improved on his earlier pace in the session, and then surpassed his best effort from Q1 to end qualifying with a 1m22.310s lap.
“The red flag made an unknown,” said Ye. “So we had to really push at the end to make the gap and happy that we did it.”
Sebastian Estner went second fastest, and was then matched by his VAR team-mate and brother Andreas. As Sebastian set his 1m22.697s lap first, he gets to start on the front row. Maldonado joins Andreas Estner on row two of the grid, and the second Motopark car of Niklas Krutten will start fifth.
Ido Cohen qualified sixth for Carlin, while his title-contending team-mate Zane Maloney continued his torrid weekend and was 11th fastest of the 12 drivers on the grid. Andrade was seventh, ahead of Double R Racing’s Ayrton Simmons, Drivex School pair Glenn van Berlo and Shihab Al Habsi, Maloney and Bardinon.
